Around us, artists of all ages come and go in a bewildering procession of unpretentious talent. One of them chooses to perform the painfully melancholy “Sodade”, a song made famous by Cesaria Evora, the queen of Cape Verdean music. Towards the end of the session, Lura adds her voice, walking girlishly to the front of the room, smiling to acquaintances, before delivering two achingly beautiful ballads from the Cape Verde islands, infused with the fatalistic spirit of “morna”, that celebrated Cape Verdean equivalent of fado. Impressive though the other singers have been, Lura lifts proceedings to another level. It is little wonder that the charismatic 31-year-old performer is talked of as the natural successor to Evora.

Lura, Purcell Room, London | | Guardian Unlimited Arts
